Dan Huang
Dan Huang is a seasoned minister who has served in parachurch and church ministry, in a variety of cultural settings. He is married to his wife of 19 years, Maureen, who serves with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Together, they have four children – Andrew (15), Ezra (13), Joshua (10), and Annabelle (4).
Born and raised in Southern California, Dan grew up in a Chinese immigrant church and came to faith at a young age. However, it was not until his college years when his faith truly became his own and he committed himself to a life of ministry.
After graduating from Northwestern University in the Chicago area, Dan joined InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, serving with Asian American students in Downtown Chicago. Several years later, while pursuing graduate studies, he served in other roles focusing worship and the arts. Then, upon completing his Masters of Divinity with a focus on Cross-Cultural Ministry, Dan and Maureen (and two kids) moved to the Pasadena area to be closer to family and for Dan to begin doctoral studies at Fuller’s School of Intercultural Studies. During this season of academic work, Dan continued to serve with InterVarsity as a Multiethnic Resource Specialist until his attention shifted toward his field research on the religious experiences of secular youth in Beijing, China. After returning to the US, God began to nudge Dan away from academia and toward pastoral ministry within the local church. Serving as a worship pastor and as a transitional lead pastor, Dan found that pastoral ministry was, for him, a place of joy and thriving. He is excited to enter into this new season of ministry with Newsong Los Angeles.
Dan describes his ministry passion as “helping others connect with God and God’s mission.” He is passionate about understanding culture and cultural differences as a way to both celebrate the diversity of God’s people and as a way to invite others into a journey with Jesus. His work in intercultural ministry and study, both domestically and abroad, has increased his understanding and engagement with issues of mission and justice. Additionally, over the past year, helping lead others through conversations on race and ethnicity has been a source of ministry fulfillment. For the local church, Dan is motivated by a picture or vision of an emotionally and socially healthy church that pursues God and God’s work of reconciliation, grace, and justice in its community and around the world. He is energized by the prospect of strengthening, developing, and growing alongside a missional community that is deeply rooted in God’s Word, dependent on the Spirit through prayer, and who are committed to one another with the love of Christ.
